Kenyan rugby legend Collins Injera has today announced his retirement after 17 years on the pitch.
The announcement was posted to his social media, much to the dismay of fans. The end of the tenure is the culmination of what Injera calls “17 years of literal blood, sweat and tears to finally step away from this great game that has given him more than he could ever ask for.”
“Everything must come to an end, sometime. I have always said that i will know it’s time, because my body will tell me. And for the past months it has really ‘spoken’ to me so, finally j have decoded to listen to it,” Wrote the player who comes from a family that has a rugby legacy.
The 35-year-old played his first match with Kenya Simbas against Southern Spears in South Africa in 2005 and the last with the 15s team at the Repechage Rugby World Cup Final qualifying tournament against Hong Kong on November 11 last year in France.
In 2009, he was named the Sports Personality of the Year at the SOYA Awards and won a Cup title medal during the 2016 Singapore leg.
Throughout his illustrious career, Injera achieved major milestones and was living proof that Kenyan athletes can make a good living solely off of sports, if and when proper infrastructure are in place.
He bows out as the world’s second top try scorer in 7s with 279.
