NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 28 – A once vibrant Agape Kainuk Comprehensive School in Turkana South Sub-County in Turkana County had, from August 2023, fallen silent, its classrooms empty and desks gathering dust, as bandits terrorised the area.
For nearly 18 months, the laughter and chatter of learners were replaced with fear, forcing families to choose safety over education.
The situation began to change in 2025 when the government, through a multi-agency approach including the National Police Service (NPS), stamped its authority and restored order.
Security forces worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of residents, sending a clear message that schools, children, and communities were no longer easy targets for criminal activity.
Today, Agape Kainuk Comprehensive School stands as a testament to these efforts.
Learners who had moved to distant neighbouring schools have returned to classrooms, teachers are back at work, and the sound of learning fills the air once again.
Confirming the school’s revival, Head Teacher Agnes Nakain Loreng said: “We greatly appreciate the work done by the security agencies. Things have truly changed for the better today.”
She added, “The school closed over 18 months ago due to increased cases of banditry. At that time, it had a population of over 400 pupils. After security was restored, the school population now stands at over 300 pupils, with numbers growing daily.”
“This year alone, we have received a significant number of new learners. Teachers have also been posted by the government, and we expect more with time.”
The return of learners and teachers marks more than just numbers; it represents renewed hope for families who once feared sending their children to school.
Learners now walk the dusty roads under the Turkana sun with confidence, knowing that security officers are present to protect them.
The reopening of Agape Kainuk highlights how coordinated security interventions can transform communities. Beyond classrooms, the work of police and other agencies has restored trust, enabling children to pursue education without fear.
