NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 23 – Kenyan basketball prodigy Madina Okot turned the paint into her personal playground, delivering a stunning masterpiece off the bench to propel the Atlanta Dream to a 94-87 victory over the Toronto Tempo at State Farm Arena.
The clinical performance earned the 21-year-old rookie the official Player of the Game honors. Okot racked up a spectacular career-high 18 points, 7 rebounds, and a blistering 77.8% field goal percentage (7-of-9 shooting) in just 18 minutes of action.
While Okot has been progressively finding her feet in the fast-paced WNBA, she bypassed the acclimatization phase against Toronto.
The 6-foot-6 center did nearly all of her heavy damage in a ferocious first-half blitz, where she dominated the interior to score 16 of her 18 total points.
Okot repeatedly established deep post position, using her imposing length and quick footwork to completely dismantle Toronto’s defensive structures.
Alongside teammate Allisha Gray, who also poured in 16 first-half points, Okot’s dominant inside presence allowed Atlanta to effortlessly construct a massive 59-41 cushion heading into the locker room.
Whenever the rookie checked into the game, the game plan from the Atlanta perimeter players was simple and lethal: feed the hot hand. The clinical nature of Okot’s 7-of-9 shooting display drew immense praise from head coach Karl Smesko, who highlighted her ability to punish Toronto before they could adjust their schemes.
Though Toronto attempted a desperate second-half surge behind Marina Mabrey’s 23 points, Atlanta relied on their defensive stops and brilliant ball movement (23 assists on 34 made field goals) to seal their fourth consecutive victory.
With the victory, the Dream push their regular-season record to an impressive 12-4, maintaining their firm grip atop the WNBA Eastern Conference standings. For Okot, eclipsing her previous career-best of 14 points in such an efficient, authoritative fashion sends a loud message to the rest of the league: the Kenyan center is officially arriving as a consistent, high-impact scoring threat.
