In a bold move to enhance Pan-African unity and economic integration, the Kenyan government recently announced that Kenya is now fully visa-free for all African nationals.
This progressive step aligns with a growing movement across the continent to ease border restrictions, making travel within Africa simpler, boosting tourism, and fostering stronger regional collaboration.
Following this announcement, many Kenyans are wondering where they, too, can travel across the continent without needing a visa. The answer is promising. In 2025, the Kenyan passport grants visa-free access to over 20 African countries, and several more offer convenient e-visa or visa-on-arrival options.
Within East Africa, travel has long been streamlined thanks to regional cooperation under the East African Community. Kenyans can travel freely to Uganda and Tanzania for up to 90 days without a visa. Rwanda has taken this even further by allowing Kenyan citizens to stay visa-free for up to 180 days. Rwandan immigration also permits entry using only a national ID, underscoring just how integrated the region has become. Burundi and South Sudan also permit visa-free stays for up to 90 days, continuing the trend of openness within the region.
Southern Africa is also embracing Kenyan travelers with open arms. South Africa, which previously had more restrictive visa requirements, began allowing Kenyans to visit visa-free for up to 90 days starting in 2023. Several other southern African nations including Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mauritius, and Mozambique all offer visa-free entry to Kenyans, typically for 30 to 90 days depending on the country. Mozambique, a popular destination for coastal tourism, recently updated its entry policy to allow Kenyans a 30-day visa-free stay. In October 2023, Angola joined the list, offering visa-free access to Kenyans for up to 30 days per year. Even the small kingdom of Eswatini now permits Kenyan citizens to enter visa-free for short stays.
The picture is just as encouraging in West Africa, where a number of countries are working to support African mobility. Benin and Gambia are among the most open nations, granting Kenyans visa-free access for up to 90 days. Ghana and Togo also allow entry without a visa, typically for 60 to 90 days depending on the current bilateral agreements. These policies reflect a broader trend, inspired by ECOWAS frameworks, of greater cooperation between East and West African nations.
In Central and the Horn of Africa, progress continues steadily. Ethiopia currently offers Kenyan citizens visa-free access for up to 12 months, one of the most generous policies on the continent. Eritrea, Burundi, and South Sudan also allow Kenyans to enter without a visa, though travelers are advised to check security conditions prior to visiting these countries.
Kenya’s decision to waive visa requirements for all Africans mirrors similar efforts by countries like Rwanda, Benin, Gambia, and Seychelles, which have opened their borders to all African nationals.
