Music A-lister Nicki Minaj is opening up on why she turned down a request on Doja Cat’s new album Planet Her.
The lyrical genius divulge she had been asked to feature on Doja Cat’s Get Into It (Yuh) but turned down the offer.
Owing to her unparalleled lyrical prowess and hit-making chops, Minaj is a highly-sought after feature. Turns out Doja Cat wanted her input in Get Into It (Yuh), more than a year after the two collaborated on Doja’s smash hit Say So.
The High School rapper had a Twitter Spaces session with fans when she made the revelation. Minaj attributed one of the factors that motivated her into not hopping on the song to a lot of involvement of ‘middlemen’ in the process.
“The truth is, she asked me to get on that song,” she revealed. “It’s not that I’m too busy at all. It’s just, there were middle people involved in that situation so I had told her, if it was like how me and BIA were direct and we dealt with each other directly, it would be different. But I didn’t love that song because I didn’t think I could bring anything to it. So I asked them to send me something else. I think that was the second song they sent me but I asked them to send me something else and they didn’t send me anything else,” said Minaj.
Doja’s Get Into It (Yuh) samples Minaj’s 2010 record Massive Attack, and it would have probably been natural for Minaj to want to hop on it.
The Superbass rapper has different thoughts: “It’s just that if I don’t feel like I can bring something unique to the record, I don’t wanna do it anymore,” she said. “So right now, there are a lot of artists, I’m talking about artists that I really like, that ask for us to do a feature. And I just told all of them like, ‘Yo, let’s really get the right thing.’ ‘Cause right now, it’s a different everything for me. I don’t wanna just do shit just to do shit. And especially with artists that I love and stuff, I really wanna make a moment with them that’s gonna last,’’ she says while also admitting she was never a big fan of her 2010 single.
Get Into It (Yuh) has over 70 million views on Spotify and is a standout track off of Doja’s Planet Her album. Minaj and Doja collaborated on the latter’s Say So hit in 2020.
