The social justice (or lack thereof) temperatures in Kenya are hitherto at boiling point. It has been two days of demonstrations geared towards resisting the controversial finance bill that has Kenyans putting their best protesting foot forward against it.
What better than Kenyan musicians lending their voices to the good cause? Popular musicians Nadia Mukami and Trio Mio are steering the movement.
Nadia Mukami – Wake Up
As the name suggests, the track serves as a ‘wake up’ call to Kenyans to take their formidable power back. The ballad bears emotion as Mukami implores citizens to challenge the status quo. The icing on the cake is her impromptu speech over the track, hailing Kenyans’ resilience, paying homage and asking for better governance. The works!
Trio Mio – Occupy The Streets
The rapper dropped the freestyle on Thursday, June 20. The anthemic song features footage from Tuesday’s (June 18) demonstrations in the CBD. He calls out the government over overtaxation and neglect of citizens, while hailing departed heroic figures like Wangari Maathai, Achieng Oneko, JM Kariuki, Dedan Kimathi, Tom Mboya among other legendary political figures.
Tuesday’s protests sparked worldwide attention with the #RejectGlobalFinanceBill trending in many countries the world over. For the second time this week, frustrated citizens braved teargas, being belted with stones, roughed up, mistreated and hosed down with colored liquids by marauding police officers, in spite of the fact that said citizens staged only peaceful protests.
