American music legend Stevie Wonder has officially embraced Ghana as his new home, receiving his Certificate of Citizenship in a heartfelt ceremony on Monday, May 13th.
Kow Essuman, the Legal Counsel to Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, proudly announced Wonder’s new status, highlighting the significance of the occasion at the esteemed Jubilee House in Accra, the capital city.
“Stevie Wonder is now a proud Ghanaian citizen. Today, he took the Oath of Allegiance and was presented with his Certificate of Citizenship by Registration here at Jubilee House. Congratulations, Sir, and a warm welcome to Ghana,” Essuman expressed with evident joy.
For Wonder, born Stevland Hardaway Morris, this moment marks a culmination of his deep-seated connection to Ghana and his profound embrace of his African heritage. This sentiment has resonated throughout his career, notably in the 1970s when he often referred to himself as “the third from the sun” in his music, signalling a profound yearning to reconnect with his roots.

Stevie is not the only celebrity who has received citizenship in an African country in recent times, British actor Idris Elba, was granted citizenship in his father’s native country, Sierra Leone in 2019.
