Social media has revolutionized how people communicate with each other. It allows users to stay in touch with friends and family but where do we draw the line?
Creating social media boundaries is as essential as using the different platforms daily for the sake of one’s mental well-being.
Content creator Murugi Munyi recently took to social media to speak on the boundaries she is implementing to maintain her mental health while using social media.
The right to block anyone
Murugi feels she has the right to cut off and block anyone from her platforms if they are being rude,disrespectful, unkind or making her feel unsafe. Her platform is like her house and she wants it to be a positive place and no negativity will be tolerated.
No opening DMs from strangers
On her direct messages Murugi will not open photos or links from followers whom she is not familiar with or whom don’t explain the reason for sending the attachments. This is because in the past, she has received unsolicited pictures of body parts and inappropriate messages.
No to medical appeals
Murugi’s third boundary is on medical appeals. She will not post medical appeals that are not from friends or people that she knows or verified medical appeals. By posting unverified medical appeals , she runs the risk of promoting a scam, something that she doesn’t want to be at the receiving end of.
The right to accept or refuse brand deals
The next boundary is reserving the right to choose which brands she wants to work with. Murugi says that this should be key for every content creator and that they can choose not work with a certain brand if they so wish and not to feel bullied into working with a brand. She will refuse to work with a brand simply because they don’t align with her brand.
The right to privacy
Privacy is not secrecy on the platform, and Murugi feels she has the right to keep some parts of her life personal despite being on the public platform. Followers should respect her privacy and not pry on matters she has intentionally refused to share. That everyone deserves some form of privacy in their lives.
The sentiments by the mother of three were echoed and supported by her followers who praised her for implementing such boundaries.
