The iconic MTV Shuga franchise made a powerful comeback to Kenya with the premiere of MTV Shuga Mashariki on April 30, 2025, at The Tamarind Brasserie in Nairobi.
Hosted by the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, the glamorous event brought together cast, crew, producers, media, and partners for an exclusive first look at the series and a chance to engage with its creators.
The new season premieres in Kenya on Citizen TV on May 13 at 11 PM EAT, airing weekly every Tuesday. It will also be broadcasted on BET internationally and streamed on the MTV Shuga YouTube channel from May 14, with new episodes dropping Wednesdays at 8 PM EAT.
Set against the backdrop of Enkare University, Shuga Mashariki follows a group of students as they navigate love, identity, mental health, and sexuality in a hyper-connected world. The series boldly tackles real-life issues faced by Kenyan youth—from sexual and reproductive health to gender norms, financial independence, consent, and the influence of social media.
The cast features a dynamic mix of fresh and familiar faces including Serah Wanjiru, Basil Mungai, Matthew Ngugi, Wilson Muchemi, Fatuma Gichuru, Julie Brenda, Fridah Mumbe, Mariam Bishar, and Makena Kahuha—each delivering authentic performances that deepen the emotional impact of the series.
“This is a uniquely Kenyan story, created by and for young people,” said Mitchelle Kimathi, Country Manager (Kenya), MTV Staying Alive Foundation. “We’re committed to delivering relatable content that sparks meaningful conversations.”
Directed by an all-Kenyan team—June Ndinya, Mkaiwawi “Mkay” Mwakaba, and Likarion Wainaina—the series brings cinematic storytelling to the small screen, with striking visuals shaped by acclaimed cinematographer Enos Olik. The production was brought to life by Reuben Odanga of Multan Production Limited.
Developed under the Surround Sound Kenya Programme, this eight-part season continues MTV Shuga’s legacy as Africa’s leading youth drama—combining entertainment with social impact. Executive Director Wame Jallow noted, “Shuga is more than a show; it’s a movement. Our goal is long-term, transformative impact in the lives of young people.”
The premiere episode kicks off at Club Baze, where one wild night unravels into betrayal, heartbreak, and life-changing decisions—raising a central question: Who are you when no one is watching?
