It is amazing how Jordan Peele brings to life the most magical yet terrifying spectacles the cinemas have ever seen.
Off the success of horror movies ‘Get Out’ and ‘Us’, Peele is poised to take cinemagoers to the skies with this adventure like no other with his new offering titled ‘Nope’. Starring award-winning stars Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer as siblings OJ and Emerald.
The first thing that strikes you are the men in the cowboy hats, against horses, a vast expanse of land and the sky ripe with suspense, a stately house, a porch looking long into the distance. You can’t unsee what is the most remarkable thing about that scene, that those men on horses are Black. In the ranches where countless served as slaves.
It is beautiful to see the wonderful family dynamic, love, and spirit of adventure shine through despite the fear and the horror. The taking back of the narrative for Black people from slaves to ranch owners who go as far as fighting an alien day and night as well as their ultimate survival is breathtaking.
Kaluuya is reliably grim but oozes strength while Palmer channels a vivacious, entrepreneurial young girl with ease. Michael Abels’ music and sound effect create an aura of the strange and unknown presence in the skies.
Otis Haywood Jr (Daniel Kaluuya) inherited a ranch from his father Otis Haywood Sr, who died in a strange incident. Now he works as a horse trainer in Hollywood, an industry where nearly everything is being replaced by its CGI equivalents.
When his younger sister Emerald (Keke Palmer) comes back to the ranch, the siblings become aware of a presence in the sky, a saucer-shaped thing they think of as a UFO. It frightens the horses and the humans, but the Haywoods see money in it. That is if they manage to capture a video whose authenticity can be verified, they will be much better off financially.
But before their money-making attempts can come to fruition when they discover a horrifying truth about the extraterrestrial presence hovering over the sky. Now, their attention is less on the hypothetical money and more on the very real danger to their lives.
The science fiction horror film is one that is guaranteed to have you on the edge of your seat asking what next.
