Meek Mill’s album – Dreams Worth More Than Money – was picked as the winner yesterday at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards. Mill took home the coveted award after seeing off competition from Drake, Dr. Dre and Kendrick Lamar.
Drake had two albums nominated in this category. If you’re Reading This It’s Too Late was expected to scoop the award, while his collabo with Future in, What a Time to Be Alive, was also expected to be a strong contender. Mill also saw off Kendrick’s critically acclaimed To Pimp a Butterfly.
Drake was announced the Top Rap Artist and appeared in 11 categories as a nominee.
Unlike other music awards, the BillBoard Music award does not use a panel of judges, sales or public voting. Instead, finalists are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital songs sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social interactions on social media. According to Billboard, these measurements are tracked year-round by Billboard and its data partners.
The Weeknd and Adele emerged the biggest winners in the 2016 awards with the Canadian taking 8 awards and Adele scooping five awards including the top overall artist and the top selling song.
