Kenyan digital creator Maureen Waititu has spoken out powerfully against critics of her recent weight loss, reminding fans that her transformation was a choice rooted in health not aesthetics.
In a recent Instagram Story, the mother of two shared a throwback photo from her pre-motherhood modeling days, writing, “This is how I’ve always [looked] before my kiddos for those who have refused to accept the ‘new me’,” she wrote alongside a striking photo of herself in a denim shirt and black shorts. “Let me say this, I have zero shame for losing weight for better health and you cannot pay enough to go back to all the issues I’ve had with weight gain.”
Her statement comes as a bold response to comments from some fans lamenting the changes in her body following her massive weight loss, particularly around her hips.
“The ones for, oh you no longer have hips, oh, who told her she looks better with weight loss, oh please bring back your hips,” she added, accompanied by a facepalm emoji. “I choose health and agility.”
In a follow-up story, she reflected on her modeling journey, noting that she was part of a generation that helped shift beauty standards in the fashion industry.
“Yes I was that girl,” she captioned a photo of herself walking the runway at a Samantha Bridal event. “P.S. This is when they started accepting curvy models. I weighed 61/62kgs. For context, I am 168cm or 5’6″. Now I weigh 64kgs with 44 inches of hips that do not lie.”
Waititu also used the opportunity to promote a healthier lifestyle, directing her followers to Nairobi Bariatric, a weight management and bariatric support center, for those looking to embark on a similar journey.
Her response comes after a year-long journey that she only recently began to speak about publicly. On May 20, 2025, Maureen posted a video comparing her current self to a clip from 355 days prior. The transformation was striking—but the real change, she said, was internal.
“It’s taken me tremendous courage to put this here,” she wrote. “I was determined not just to lose the weight—but to keep it off for the rest of my life.”
