People in Indonesia breaking face mask rules have been ordered to dig graves of COVID-19 victims.
Eight individuals were punished for leaving their homes without face coverings in east Java and have been forced to dig graves at a public cemetery for those who have passed away from the virus.
Officials hope that it acts as a “deterrent” for those who violate the country’s coronavirus guidelines.
Cerme district head Suyono told Tribune News: “There are only three available grave diggers at the moment, so I thought I might as well put these people to work for them.
“Hopefully this can create a deterrent effect against violations.”
Those punished were reportedly told not to dig the graves in groups of two but were not required to participate in the funeral services.
