The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has warned the public against the use of vaginal pearls also known as Yoni pearls.
In a statement issued Monday (07.08.2023) regarding a brand identified as “Yoni Pearls”, the Pharmacy Board said the products and other similar brands are unregistered in Kenya.
The Pharmacy Board pointed out that ‘Yoni’ is neither registered nor authorized for use in Kenya as required under the Pharmacy and Poisons Act (Cap 244).
The board further warned that the pearls also referred as herbal tampons or cleansing pearls pose public health risks.
Vagina pearls are a recipe for disaster. Inserting a foreign object into the vagina can cause irritation, disturbance of vaginal pH, increased discharge, odor, and infections.
The pearls are marketed as a natural, holistic ways to cleanse or detox your vagina or uterus of “toxins,” negative emotions, past sexual partners, and hormonal imbalances. They’re also said to help with heavy periods, endometriosis, yeast infections, and bacterial vaginosis.
The product is mostly sold online in sets of three with prices ranging form Sh600 to Sh1,000 a set.
