NAIROBI, Kenya Jun 23 – Kuresoi North Member of Parliament Alfred Mutai is due in court on Tuesday following violent clashes in Kuresoi North that left five people injured and vehicles destroyed.
The legislator was detained at Nakuru Police Station on Monday after surrendering to police over the chaos witnessed in the area last Friday.
Police said Mutai had been wanted for questioning since the incident occurred and later presented himself at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices in Nakuru accompanied by his lawyers.
After several hours of interrogation, detectives opted to detain the MP pending his expected arraignment as investigations continue.
The unrest occurred during a Youth Empowerment Meeting held at Sirikwa Umoja Grounds in Kuresoi Sub-County and attended by Susan Kihika, Oscar Sudi and Irene Njoki.
According to police, preliminary investigations indicate that the violence involved suspected goons allegedly allied to Mutai and supporters of Governor Kihika.
Authorities said five people were injured during the confrontation, including three who sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Police further reported that at least two vehicles were damaged during the clashes, including a bus transporting tents and chairs to the venue, which was allegedly set ablaze by unknown individuals.
The incident triggered a major security operation in the region, leading to the arrest of 56 suspects. However, 44 were later released after interrogation.
Twelve suspects linked to the alleged arson, assault and malicious damage to property incident were presented before the Nakuru Criminal Court on Monday under a miscellaneous criminal application.
Investigators had sought 21-day custodial orders to complete investigations, but the court declined the request and instead released the suspects on bond and cash bail terms.
Each suspect was granted a bond of Sh50,000 with one surety or an alternative cash bail of Sh20,000 with one contact person.
The court also ordered the suspects to report to DCI offices in Kuresoi North every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until investigations are concluded.
The matter will be mentioned in court on July 13.
