Kenyan artistes are a pissed off lot. At least most of them. This is owing to their latest Perfomers Rights Society of Kenya (PRISK) earnings, or lack thereof.
Every year, local musicians decry the Kenyan music industry’s poor treatment of them, especially as regards minimalist earnings and almost nonxistent sources of revenue, and this year is no different. It is about that time when musicians receive peanuts in form of MPesa. While some are merely laughing it off , someone are speaking out. This year’s earnings, per the screenshots, amounted to Ksh 1, 215.
Once popular rapper Wangechi posted a screenshot of her ridiculous payment writing: “Annual reminder that being an artist in Kenya is still an extreme sport.”Rapper and flamboyant businessman KRG The Don, on the other hand, ridiculed the negligent amount of payment. “We’ve now received money to the tunes of billions. Who wants a loan? The money we were waiting for is her. Our president we are so proud of you!” He wrote.
Singer Kenzo followed suit writing: “What is this surely? It has even been collected by fuliza.”
PRISK is a collective management organization that collects remuneration on behalf of rights holders from various users of works and distribute royalties to the respective rights holders.
