NAIROBI, Kenya, May 19 – A team of 12 top Kenyan students are in Shenzhen, China, to compete in the Huawei ICT Competition Global Final, set for May 20–24, 2025.
The students will join over 160,000 participants from 2,200 institutions worldwide in the annual contest, which tests skills in networking, cloud computing, AI, and innovation. Kenya’s delegation includes strong female representation and will be accompanied by four lecturers and a motivational coach.
CS Migos lauded the initiative for advancing digital inclusion and youth empowerment. “This competition is a pathway to progress, inclusion, and opportunity,” he said.
Huawei Kenya Deputy CEO Stephen Zang celebrated Kenya’s growing ICT talent and government backing. Since its launch, the Huawei ICT program has trained more than 12,000 university students and 500 TVET learners in emerging technologies.
In 2024, Kenya secured two First Prizes and three Third Prizes at the global finals.
This year’s competition coincides with the Global ICT Accelerating Education Transformation Summit, which will convene leaders from UNESCO and national governments to explore digital learning strategies.
“We are proud to represent Kenya and confident we’ll return with medals,” said team member Eric Muriithi Karimi from Egerton University.
