Kenya’s reggae community is mourning the loss of veteran entertainer John Maina, popularly known as MC Fullstop, who passed away on August 1, 2025.
A beloved figure in the country’s reggae scene, MC Fullstop was known for his infectious energy and commanding presence behind the mic, becoming a staple in live events, radio shows, and matatu mixes across the country.
MC Fullstop had been battling tuberculosis (TB) for several years. In 2021, he was diagnosed with TB in his lungs, which eventually led to the complete collapse of his left lung. In 2022, the disease spread to his throat, severely affecting his voice and making it difficult for him to walk or talk.
In one of his final social media posts, he openly described the severity of his condition, revealing that his left lung had “totally collapsed” and that he was surviving on just one. He explained how the lungs, unlike the liver, do not regenerate, leaving little hope for recovery. In a heartbreaking moment of clarity, he appeared to foreshadow his own death, saying he might be forced to “hang boots” and thanking fans for their support during his most difficult moments.
Despite multiple hospitalizations, MC Fullstop remained active, even making occasional radio appearances after moving to Mombasa in hopes that the warmer climate would aid his recovery.
In the past, MC Fullstop was also the subject of false death rumors that circulated online. He publicly addressed these hoaxes and urged authorities to act against the spread of misinformation, which he said deeply hurt his family and worsened his condition.
