The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) is launching new investigations on Always sanitary towels.
This is after an outcry from women who shared their nasty experiences with the pads earlier on this week on social media using the hashtag #MyAlwaysExperience. Social media users complained that the sanitary towels were different from the ones manufactured for the US Market and caused such burns, rashes, and leakages as a result of the manufacturer making the pads using nylon instead of cotton.
According to a report by Nairobi News, a press statement from the agency said that earlier quality surveillance and testing done on Always samples showed that the pads complied with required standards. Products that complied included variants of Always sanitary towels including Always Ultra, Platinum, Maxi, Ultra-normal and extra-long.
KEBS warned that if a breach of quality will be detected in the fresh investigations, action would be taken including market withdrawal of the substandard products.
“Following the concerns expressed on social media, KEBS has launched investigations that include extensive market surveillance and testing of these products to ascertain if there exists any breach of quality standards. The outcome analysis will determine the next cause of action including market withdrawal of any substandard product.”
Proctor & Gamble, otherwise just known as P&G, the manufacturer of Always, defended itself in a series of tweets, insisting the sanitary towels sold in the Kenyans market are of the same quality of their products in other international markets.
The firm assured their consumers that the sanitary towels are subjected to rigorous tests including being tested on real women to ensure that they are safe for use.
