NAIROBI, Kenya, July 23 – Jubilee Health Insurance has partnered with global insurtech firm Bolttech to roll out embedded insurance products aimed at expanding access to health cover by integrating insurance into everyday consumer transactions.
The partnership will allow customers to access insurance through services they already use, including digital payments, fuel purchases, travel bookings and other online platforms, without having to buy separate policies.
Jubilee Health Insurance Chief Executive Officer and Principal Officer Njeri Jomo said the initiative is intended to make health insurance more accessible and help reduce the country’s insurance protection gap.
“Our focus is to ensure insurance becomes part of everyday life rather than something people only think about when they need medical care. By embedding insurance into existing customer journeys, we can significantly expand access to affordable health protection,” Jomo said.
She said the insurer is developing products for different customer segments while using technology to simplify distribution.
“We are developing tailor-made products for different customer segments while leveraging technology to deliver them seamlessly. Our focus is not only on curative care but also on preventive solutions that keep people healthy,” she said.
Jomo noted that many Kenyans still rely on out-of-pocket healthcare spending, exposing households to financial hardship when illness strikes.
Under the partnership, Jubilee will use customer insights from partner businesses to integrate existing insurance products or develop new ones tailored to specific consumer needs.
Among the first offerings will be HospiCash, a hospital cash benefit that provides policyholders with financial support during hospitalization. The insurer also plans to introduce embedded personal accident and funeral cover, with pilot launches expected in the coming months.
The products will target underserved groups, including retail consumers and gig economy workers, as Jubilee seeks to increase health insurance penetration in Kenya and across East Africa.
Bolttech Africa General Manager Bente Krogmann said the company’s technology enables insurers to distribute insurance through businesses that consumers already interact with daily.
“Our role is to ensure insurance becomes available within the services people are already using. Whether someone is buying a flight ticket, a bus ticket or making other digital transactions, protection should be available with just a click,” Krogmann said.
She added that Bolttech’s platform allows businesses to integrate insurance products through application programming interfaces (APIs), enabling customers to purchase cover without disrupting their existing digital journeys.
