Inspector-General of Police Hilary Mutyambai has ordered investigations into the brutality meted on students at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology during Monday’s protests.
Mutyambai said he has directed the Internal Affairs Unit within the National Police Service to undertake the investigations and give recommendations on action to be taken by Wednesday (13.11.19).
“Following the unfortunate incident, the Internal Affairs Unit has been directed to commence investigations and make recommendations for action within 24 hours,” Mutyambai said in a statement, “Any police officer found culpable will be held accountable.”
“Officers are further reminded that police action should never be punitive, it should focus on maintenance of law and order, and processing offenders for court,” the statement added.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi has also condemned the brutality on the protesting students and demanded action.

Videos showing anti-riot police officers brutalising students have gone viral on social media, raising fresh concerns on professionalism within the National Police Service.
In a phone call by one of the local radio stations to one of the officers identified from the viral videos named Kiprotich, the police officer denied beating up the JKUAT student moments after he admitted that he was working in Juja yesterday (11.11.19).
Several students were injured during yesterday’s protests in Juja, with some said to have sustained gunshot injuries.
