Mercy Masika has received great honor with her latest appointment. The Gospel musician known for her talent has made history as the first Kenyan being named a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador.
The ‘Huyu Yesu’ crooner has been highly involved through the LuquLuqu campaign, leading thousands to donate. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the LuQuLuQu campaign is a collaborative effort by the UN Refugee Agency and prominent African personalities and companies to promote principles and values of sharing responsibility for one another, and sharing resources, in support of the displaced people in Africa.
Since it first launched in November 2017, it has been involved in various activities of which Masika was an integral part. In September 2018, Mercy was part of the LuquLuqu ‘Step for Safety’ campaign that was a fundraising initiative for the refugees in Kakuma and other refugee camps.
The announcement will see Mercy have a more pivotal role in the organization, using her platform to reach out to refugees and non-refugees rallying support for the activities of the UNHCR.

Taking to Instagram she said that she developed an interest in the plight of refugees as she draws from Scripture. A strong Christian herself, she shared her excitement upon receiving the news of her latest appointment. She said, “It is an honor for me to be appointed a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. In my time as Goodwill Ambassador, I would like to spend more time to meet with people who have been forced to flee their homes and use my platforms to share what they go through so that people are able to understand what it is like to be a refugee.”
Other celebrities who have been named Goodwill Ambassadors include Sudanese model Alek Wek, South African actress, and human rights activist Nomzamo Mbatha, American actress Cate Blanchett and actor Ben Stiller among many others.
