Spotify has named genre-bending Ghanaian artist Amaarae as its EQUAL Africa Artist for August, celebrating her as a fearless force reshaping the continent’s musical and cultural narrative.
Born Ama Serwah Genfi, the singer-songwriter has long walked the line between continents and cultures, drawing on her upbringing between Ghana and the United States to forge a sound that defies labels. Her music is a genre-melting blend of alternative, pop, R&B, and Afrobeats, wrapped in a visual identity that’s just as daring.
Amaarae’s sonic journey started in an unlikely place , a computer lab in Ghana back in 2009, where she began experimenting with a cracked version of FL Studio. That moment ignited a creative flame that would lead to critically acclaimed projects like The Angel You Don’t Know and international chart-toppers like SAD GIRLZ LUV MONEY.
This year, she’s made waves again with her new album BLACK STAR, a project she describes as “a rallying cry for youth culture around the world.” Rooted in her Ghanaian heritage and charged with fearless energy, the album brings alternative African sounds to center stage, boldly amplifying voices often left on the margins.
Amaarae’s rising global influence was further cemented by her appearance on Spotify’s Global Impact List, highlighting the most-exported songs from Ghana in the first half of the year. She stands as a symbol of how African music is breaking borders with unprecedented speed and resonance.
Reflecting on her journey, Amaarae says: “I navigate the music world with balance, willpower, and strength. The challenges are real, don’t get me wrong, but I put my blinders on, lock into tunnel vision, and get to work. And when I come across another woman on the journey, especially a Black woman, I do my best to share knowledge, create opportunities, and lighten the load where I can.”
Spotify’s EQUAL programme, which amplifies the voices of women artists globally, celebrates Amaarae not only for her unique sound but for her role in shifting perceptions around African and female artistry.
