There’s no stopping Kenyan filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu.
Wanuri has found success in Hollywood years after her Lesbian love film ‘Rafiki’ was banned in Kenya.
Fresh off the debut of her Netflix romantic comedy-drama film titled ‘Look Both Ways’ starring ‘Riverdale’s Lili Reinhart, ‘The Bold Type’s Aisha Dee, and award-winning actress Nia Long among many others, the talented director announced via her social media platforms that the production of Hulu’s upcoming limited series ‘Washington Black’ was wrapped up.
‘Washington Black’ is a highly anticipated nine-episode series based on Esi Edugyan’s bestselling novel. According to TV Line, the series follows the extraordinary 19th-century adventures of George Washington “Wash” Black, an 11-year-old boy (played by rising Kenyan actor Eddie Karanja) on a Barbados sugar plantation who must flee after a shocking death threatens to upend his life.
‘Lucifer’ actor Tom Ellis also stars in the series as Christopher “Titch” Wilde, an eccentric steampunk inventor whose youthful enthusiasm masks an inner vulnerability.
Kahiu’s first feature-length film, ‘From a Whisper’, based on the devastating events of the 1998 twin bombings of US Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, earned the director five African Movie Academy Awards including, Best Director and Screenplay.
Her second feature film Rafiki, a romantic drama following the lives of two young Kenyan lesbians living in a place where their love is illegal, was the first Kenyan film to screen at the festival where it received a standing ovation. It was shown at the 2018 London Film Festival. In total, the film received 17 nominations and 17 awards at different international film festivals.

As reported by The Sauce in April 2019, Kahiu and ‘Stranger Things’ actress Millie Bobby Brown teamed up for a film adaptation of the YA novel ‘The Thing About Jellyfish’ for Universal Studios. Kahiu is set to direct the film, which will be produced by Reese Witherspoon among others.
