FilmAid Kenya presents this year’s student film exhibition which is set to happen from Tuesday the 15th of September to Saturday the 19th of September.
Since 2007, FilmAid International has organized an annual film festival that strives to fulfill its mission of empowering refugees and marginalized populations throughout the world and through this, it has an extensive program in Nairobi, Kakuma, and Daadab where they train and empower 50 refugees to use the power of film to tell their own stories. This not only celebrates the stories of refugees but also those of other filmmakers from marginalized backgrounds and students from other media training institutions.
This year, amidst the COVID-19 global pandemic that has affected many artists and creatives in general, there are new ways of interacting and hosting events that have come up in order to continue practicing our craft. Therefore, this year’s exhibition session such as panel discussions and film screenings will be hosted virtually on platforms such as Zoom, Facebook, and YouTube with the theme ‘Visions of the World we desire.’
The panel discussions are scheduled for the 15th, 17th, and 19th of September will include panelists UNHCR Representative Fathiaa Abdalla, FilmAid Board Member and Former Chief Justice Dr. Willy Mutunga, Thematic expert Natasha Wabwire, Media expert Natasha Elkington, Victor Ndula a cartoonist from the Nation Media Group, Sarah Mallia the co-founder and producer of Freehand Studio, FilmAid’s Training Alumni Lisala Selenga. Some of the major topics scheduled for discussion include ‘The role of Media, Film, and Arts in a rapidly changing environment’, ‘The future of African women in Media’, ‘The future impact of storytelling and humanitarian media’ among others.
The key partners and sponsors include UNHCR, The Hollywood Foreign Press,(HFPA) The Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM), The Kenya Film Commission (KFC), Internews (INN) among others.
Categories submitted for the exhibition include documentaries, docudramas, fiction, music videos, Spoken word or poems, and visual albums.
