American filmmaker Jordan Peele is flying high with his new film ‘Nope’ featuring award-winning stars Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya.
The film follows the story of two siblings OJ (Daniel) and Emerald Haywood (Keke) running a horse ranch in California who discover something wonderful and sinister in the skies above.
During a virtual press conference recently, the award-winning Peele talked about his inspirations for the film, pushing the boundaries with ‘Nope’, casting, and what he learned from the characters.
When asked why he specifically wrote the roles of OJ and EM for British-Ugandan actor Daniel Kaluuya and American actress Keke Palmer, he said that their personalities inspired him. Daniel’s eyes spoke volumes while Keke’s bubbly nature made her the driving spirit of the film.
Speaking to The Sauce, he further delved into what he learned from these two characters saying that Daniel challenged him as a director and Keke overcoming the challenges of being a child star highlighted her resilience.
Peele revealed he created ‘Nope’ to provide the viewers with an escape with the uttermost reward from the film being how it shapes conversations and watching people take ideas from it.
He spoke about how the pandemic influenced ‘Nope’ which he wrote in 2020 saying, the helplessness the world felt, losing loved ones to Covid, he felt that it was only right that he uses that as motivation to make a movie.
Peele intimated that he is a horror movie fan naming ‘Alien’ as his favorite movie and that he wanted to push the boundaries of black horror films. He added that the supernatural has always intrigued him, making the idea of a flying saucer in his work impossible to resist.
Peele, 43, who has been hailed as a the father of a new kind of expression in cinema made his 2017 directorial debut with the horror film ‘Get Out’. He received numerous accolades, including the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, along with nominations for Best Picture and Best Director.
Nope premieres in Kenyan cinemas on August 19th, 2022.
