Empowering young Kenyans through skills, community and healthy change

NAIROBI, Kenya, July 25 – As Kenya’s youth face challenges ranging from literacy gaps to climate disruptions, there is growing urgency to equip them with more than just academic qualifications. They need practical skills, strong communities, and healthy foundations to navigate an evolving world.

Recent studies show that nearly four in ten Grade Four pupils cannot fluently read a Grade Three-level story. This literacy gap reflects wider social challenges that hinder knowledge access and youth development. Meanwhile, shifting nutrition trends and a decline in breastfeeding rates have raised concerns among health experts, warning of long-term cognitive and health risks.

Despite the hurdles, new opportunities are emerging. Climate education is being integrated into school programs through tree planting, water harvesting, and farm-based learning. These activities go beyond environmental impact—they build identity, nurture skills, and foster community. “The future belongs to those who plant today what they hope to harvest tomorrow,” a representative from Kinangop Dairy Limited (KDL) said.

Kinangop Dairy is championing this transformation. While best known for its unprocessed milk and yoghurt, the company is also nurturing youth agripreneurship, climate literacy, and food awareness. By training young farmers and promoting sustainable dairy practices, KDL is turning local food systems into vehicles for resilience, wellness, and inclusion.

With non-communicable diseases on the rise, and over 90% of packaged foods in Kenya flagged as potentially unhealthy under WHO-backed guidelines, fresh products like KDL’s dairy offerings are becoming vital. The brand’s additive-free, locally sourced range reinforces not just nutrition, but livelihoods, routines, and trust.

KDL’s recent membership in the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) gives it a stronger platform to advocate for community-first, climate-conscious dairy. The firm is also in the running for the Kenya Beverage Excellence Awards for the fourth year in a row, recognition not just of product quality, but of purpose.

Through school clubs, farming cooperatives, and mentorship, KDL supports young Kenyans seeking not just jobs, but belonging and impact. “Teach a young person how to grow, and you teach them how to stay rooted in more than just land,” said the KDL brand manager.

As Kenya stands at a generational crossroads, Kinangop Dairy’s focus on climate-smart practices, nutritional education, and youth empowerment offers a roadmap for other brands to follow. It’s not just about products—it’s about people, purpose, and progress.
