Emma Coronel, wife of Mexican drug Kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, has been arrested on drug trafficking charges and conspiring with helping to arrange her husband’s prison escape back in 2015.
Emma Coronel Aispuro, age 31, was arrested and held at Dulles International Airport in Virginia and according to court documents, she is charged with conspiring to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana for importation into the US. She is expected to appear before the Federal court in Washington on Tuesday.
She has also been charged with allegedly conspiring to help arrange Guzmán’s spectacular escape via a long tunnel from the high-security Altiplano prison in Mexico in July 2015. Joaquin was the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, an international crime syndicate which was responsible for smuggling mountains of cocaine and other drugs into the U.S during his 25-year criminal career.
Aside from being a drug lord and leader of a notorious crime syndicate for a long time, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is also famously known for his legendary prison breaks; his most elaborate one escaping through a tunnel from a hole in his cell’s shower, using a motorbike on rails underground for a faster getaway.
A plot of land was bought near the prison so that a mile long underground tunnel could be dug into the prison. His allies bought him a GPS watch so that they could “pinpoint his exact whereabouts so as to construct the tunnel with an entry point accessible to him,” court papers say.
Joaquin was sentenced to life plus 30 years in 2019 after his recapture and is still incarcerated. Emma remains in custody and it is uncertain whether she has a lawyer that can confirm or deny the allegations.
