Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has taken a bold step to trademark his popular moniker ‘Riggy G’.
The Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI) has accepted the application by the Deputy President to trademark his nickname.
According to the organisation, “Unless someone files a valid opposition, Mr Gachagua will have full rights to use the ‘Riggy G’ in all types of printed material, clothing and headgear, entertainment events, among others.”
According to the Trademark Act, a person who falsely uses a trademark will be fined a sum of Ksh200,000 or serve a 5-year jail term or both.
The viral nickname was coined by the then Catholic University law student Ivy Chelimo when she shared her views on the deputy presidential debate in July last year.
It didn’t take long for Gachagua to embrace it and he later on met Chelimo in October, a month after his swearing in as well as offered her a job in his Communication department.
