Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal team is requesting that the judge overseeing his case grant him release on a $50-million bond ahead of his October 3 sentencing.
This comes after the hip-hop mogul was acquitted of the most serious charges in his recent sex crimes trial.
In a court filing submitted on Tuesday, Combs’ defense lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, argued that Combs should not be held in jail, pointing to dangerous conditions at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC).
Agnifilo also noted that defendants convicted of similar prostitution-related offenses in the past were typically released before sentencing. They also stated that his prolonged detention at MDC since September 2024 should be considered an “exceptional circumstance” warranting his release. The lawyers raised concerns about fights and other safety risks within his detention unit.
Combs, 55, was found not guilty on July 2 of three counts of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy, charges that could have led to life sentences. However, he was convicted on two lesser charges involving the transportation of individuals for prostitution, each of which carries a potential maximum sentence of 10 years. Despite these convictions, the prosecution acknowledged that federal sentencing guidelines suggest Combs is likely to receive a sentence significantly below the statutory maximum.
Judge Arun Subramanian, who presided over Combs’ trial, had previously rejected the defense’s request for immediate release after the verdict, citing evidence of violent behavior presented during the trial.
