Congolese artist Koffi Olomide may be coming back to Kenya soon following his deportation in 2016.
According to a letter from the Ministry of Interior and co-ordination of National Government dated 24th January 2020, the ‘Selfie’ hitmaker has been granted access to come to Kenya to perform at an unspecified date.
The letter was in response to a request to revoke orders from 23rd July 2016 which barred the artist from ever stepping foot in Kenya after he was deported. Olomide was arrested at a local TV station and deported by Kenyan authorities after an outpouring of protests when a video of him assaulting one of his dancers at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport went viral.
It is a win for Advocate Gikunda Miriti on the behalf of the Kenya Professional Boxing Commission as their request was approved and now Olomide is set to perform at an event by the Boxing body.
Olomide has a long history of run-ins with the law. In 2019, he was barred from performing in South Africa following public outcry. In 2018, he was arrested in Zambia after he allegedly assaulted a photographer. In 2012, he was given a 3-month suspended sentence after assaulting his producer.
He was found guilty of the statutory rape of one of his former dancers when she was 15 years old. As reported by The Sauce, he was handed a two-year suspended jail sentence by a court in France in absentia March 2019 as he failed to turn up.
