American singer Ciara has embraced her ancestral West African roots and officially become a citizen of Benin.
During a heartfelt ceremony this past weekend, the Grammy-winning artist was presented with a certificate confirming her Beninese nationality. Overcome with emotion, Ciara tearfully expressed her gratitude, saying, “This moment holds a deep and powerful meaning for me. I’m so proud to be here.”
The 39-year-old singer, known for hits like “Level Up,” received the honor in the presence of Benin’s Minister of Tourism, Jean Michele Abimbola, and the Minister of Justice and Legislation, Yvon Detchenou.
Ciara’s visit to Benin was part of a cultural exploration supported by RollingStone Africa and the local travel group Explore Benin.
Her itinerary included stops in the bustling city of Cotonou and the historic town of Ouidah, home to the Slave Route trail and the symbolic Door of No Return, a deeply significant site for many African descendants.
By accepting Beninese citizenship, Ciara follows in the footsteps of other African American celebrities who have reclaimed African national identities. Rapper Ludacris received Gabonese citizenship alongside his family in 2020, honoring his wife’s heritage. Music legend Stevie Wonder was granted Ghanaian citizenship in 2024. In 2021, comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish was granted Ethiopian citizenship, the birthplace of her father.
