Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez are on the receiving end of flack on twitter, for what users allege to be jacking off RnB singer Amerie’s sound.
RnB singer Amerie may have disappeared into complete obscurity, but her shortlived music career still gets people talking to date. Her biggest hit, One Thing, had 2005 in an absolute chokehold, peaking at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. The chart-topper was the lead single on Amerie’s Touch sophomore album.
The jack-off conversation stems from the song’s production: Curated by popular 2000s producer Rich Harrison, the production entails the ‘go-go,’ a sound comprised of break beats and drum patterns and that sprung into mainstream popularity after the song’s success. Stories abound about Columbia Records’ disbelief in the song, and allegedly preferring J.Lo recording it , a fact which Amerie would catch wind of prompting her to leak it to radio stations. The aftermath? The song would blow up becoming one of the biggest releases of the year.
Worth noting, all three artistes were on Columbia Records’ roster.
J.Lo worked with Harrison on Get Right while Bey worked with him on her sophomore album B’Day, on songs like Greenlight and Suga Mama. Fans attribute Amerie’s disappearance from the industry to the two replicating her sound and aesthetic, a recurring conversation for years on end. Nonetheless, Harrison worked with Beyonce on Crazy in Love two years prior, and with Kelly Rowland on her 2002 track, Can’t Nobody. Both songs have the ‘go-go.’
