The annual celebration of black culture took place once again on the weekend of June 25th, 2017.
The award show hosted by the Black Entertainment Network (BET) was shrouded in controversy from the ongoing rivalry between hip-hop queens Remy Ma and 7 time BET Best Female Hip Hop artist, Nicki Minaj. Suddenly, Nicki’s 7-year winning streak with the award came to a crashing halt as Remy Ma won the award for the first time. The lyrist had fans appreciate her as she shared her excitement online via Twitter. She did not fail to drop a few lines from her diss track “Shether” leaving the audience in shock as she reignited the ongoing rap feud with her former long-time friend Nicki Minaj.

Also among the more notable highlights of the evening was the performances by Mary J Blige, New Edition and Escape. After the untimely death of Mobb Deep rapper Prodigy on the 20th of June 2017, BET set aside a performance to commemorate one of Hip Hop’s heavy hitters. Though the show was meant as a good gesture, Master P had a few choice words to share on the opportunistic nature of the BET franchise. Likening them to vultures, Master P said he was “saddened” by the moves the entertainment network has taken to celebrate African American entertainers the likes of Prince, Micheal Jackson, Whitney Houston and others only giving them their due praise when they were dead and never while they lived.
