NAIROBI, Kenya, June 17, 2026 – It was a bruising and disappointing opening day for home favorites Team Kenya at the 2026 Davis Cup Africa Group IV tournament, as visiting Algeria secured a commanding lead in their Pool A opener at the Nairobi Club.
Hoping to maximize home-court advantage on Day 1, the Kenyans instead found themselves on the back foot early, dropping both crucial singles matches to a clinical Algerian outfit.
The tone for a difficult afternoon was set in the first singles rubber.
Kenya’s most decorated modern star, Ismael Changawa, faced off against Algeria’s Samir Reguig in a high-intensity encounter.
Despite roaring support from the Nairobi crowd, Changawa struggled to break the Algerian’s rhythmic baseline play.
Hamza proved to be more clinical during the crucial break points, breaking Kenyan hearts to claim a straight-sets 6-3, 6-4 victory in a grueling battle that lasted 1 hour and 32 minutes.
With Kenya trailing 1-0 in the tie, the pressure fell squarely on the shoulders of Kael Shah to rescue the hosts in the second singles match against Toufik Sahtali.
Shah fought valiantly but ultimately fell 2-1 in a rollercoaster three-set match.
Shah initially put Kenya in the driver’s seat by taking a tightly contested first set 6-4.
However, Sahtali mounted a ferocious comeback in the second set, completely dominating the court to level the match with a 6-1 scoreline.
Shah simply could not find answers to sustain his momentum in the deciding set, as the Algerian cruised to a 6-2 finish to seal the overall tie for the visitors.
With Algeria taking an unassailable 2-0 lead ahead of the doubles match, Team Kenya’s technical bench, led by coach Rosemary Owino and captain Allan Cooper, will have to rapidly regroup.
To keep their promotion dreams alive for a top-two finish in Pool A, the hosts will now face a must-win situation in their upcoming fixtures against Ghana and Botswana.
