10 Years Later: Wangechi Reflects On the Accident That Changed Her Life Forever

This past weekend marked a deeply emotional milestone for Kenyan rapper Wangechi Waweru as she reflected on the 10th anniversary of a tragic road accident that forever altered the course of her life.

On September 14, 2014, Wangechi, then a rising star in the Kenyan music scene, was involved in a devastating car crash that claimed the life of her best friend, Tionna Wangechi, and left her with life-threatening injuries.

In a recent post on social media, Wangechi shared her reflections on the past decade, describing how the trauma of the accident continues to shape her life. “It’s been a lot of reflecting and internalizing these past two days,” she said. “One thing is for sure, the body always keeps score.”

Wangechi has been open about the physical and emotional toll the accident took on her, admitting that her recovery journey was long and arduous. She spent several months in the ICU and faced temporary paralysis on the left side of her body, a condition that required intense rehabilitation. Despite these challenges, she has emerged stronger, with a renewed commitment to taking care of her body and well-being.

“10 years on my second life,” she wrote, hinting at the profound transformation she has undergone since the accident. Wangechi acknowledges that the trauma she carries is not only emotional but also physical, and she emphasizes the importance of healing and self-care.

Her poignant message also paid tribute to her late friend Tionna, whose loss still weighs heavily on her heart. “Missing you still feels the same as the first day,” she expressed. “May your soul forever rest in peace till we meet again.”

As she celebrates her second life, the rapper remains hopeful about the future. “Hopefully I can accomplish 10 more,” she said, looking ahead with a sense of determination and purpose.

Wangechi’s music career began in 2013 when she released her debut mixtape, Consume – Chakula ya Soul, showcasing her unique style and lyrical prowess. Her breakthrough came later that year with her feature on the Ligi Soo remix, a track that brought together various female rappers and significantly boosted her popularity in the Kenyan hip-hop scene.
