NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 12 – Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has proposed the creation of approved boarding schools where indisciplined students who resort to arson to air their grievances can be taken.
Speaking at Mahiga Girls Secondary school in Nyeri, the CS stated that this can be an alternative to dealing with such cases instead of abolishing boarding schools or re-introducing caning to schools.
“We have no issue with over 99 percent of our boarding schools in the country. However, we have witnessed serious indispline cases in under one percent of these Schools and can push government to do away with boarding schools. We will come with other methods of handling the situation,” he said.
Magoha however stated that the government has no plans to abolish boarding schools but may set up special schools to serve as correctional centres to deal with errant students.
On examinations Mahogany assured that the insecurity being experienced in various parts of the country will not deter candidates from sitting for their national examinations.
“The government will ensure that all candidates will sit for national examination no matter where they are. We are working closely with the Ministry of Interior, and they have assured of a return to normalcy in the volatile areas,” he stated.
Magoha expressed optimism that normalcy will resume in the volatile regions before the examinations.
He urged candidates not to panic as they prepare, saying the fact that were out of school for nine months as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic was taken into consideration when setting the papers.
“I want to assure you that exams will be fine, and they are not meant to kill you. Candidates should as well know that you cannot manage to capture everything taught. Furthermore, exams are not set from each and everything taught in class,” he said.
Meanwhile, the CS ordered all contractors undertaking construction of Competence Based Curriculum classrooms around the country to ensure they adhere to March deadline.
