NAIROBI, Kenya, June 24, 2026 – Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has promised that the training grounds for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) will be ready in the next two months.
While handing the venues to the contractor, the CS said works will progress speedily to ensure compliance with the set timelines.
“The two training grounds that we have handed over today will be taking about two months to complete. The third one there is already in progress,” Mvurya said.

The two training grounds will be adjacent to the 60,000-seater Talanta Sports Stadium, which is currently undergoing finishing touches ahead of the continental showpiece.
In addition to the two, Kenya has also designated Nyayo Stadium, Police Sacco Grounds, Ulinzi Sports Complex, Kirigiti Stadium and Kenya Academy of Sports (KAS) Grounds as other training pitches for the month-long tournament.

Works on the aforementioned is expected to pick up in coming weeks after the National Treasury disbursed Ksh 4.1 billion towards the completion of the venues.
As far as the main pitches for Afcon are concerned, the CS divulged that Talanta and Kasarani Stadium are on course.

“The main stadium is progressing very well…I think now the bulk of the work is on mechanical and electrical. We have monitored also the pitch and and the grass has come out very well. Our team will continue to do the basic practices to make sure that the germination is also maintained. We also have some work in Kasarani, where we will be changing the pitch,” Mvurya said.
Kenya will be co-hosting Afcon with East African neighbours Uganda and Tanzania, the first time the three countries will be staging a tournament of such magnitude.
Concerns have been raised over the slow pace of works, especially in Kenya and Uganda — fears that the government has been quick to allay on numerous occasions.
The Confederation of Africa Football (Caf) has designated June 19-July 17 as the official dates for the competition in which 24 countries will be in contention.
