NAIROBI, Kenya, April 9 — The Project Management Institute (PMI) has partnered with Green Project Management (GPM) to create a new joint venture aimed at advancing sustainability in project management globally.
PMI, the world’s leading authority for project professionals, now holds a majority stake in the venture, which will integrate GPM’s sustainable project management tools, standards, and certifications into PMI’s global ecosystem.
Under the agreement, GPM’s assets, including frameworks, guides, and learning resources, will be transferred to the joint venture, while GPM will retain a minority stake and continue its research and advisory role for the next five years.
This move comes at a crucial time when the demand for sustainable practices in project management is increasing.
PMI’s research reveals that projects aligned with social good are nearly twice as likely to succeed, yet only 22% of projects currently meet that standard.
The joint venture aims to fill this gap by providing a clear, actionable roadmap for embedding sustainability across industries.
“Sustainability transformation is one of the biggest challenges of our time — and it won’t happen without projects. This joint venture is about placing project professionals at the center of that transformation,” said Pierre Le Manh, PMP, President & CEO of PMI.
The partnership will expand PMI’s offerings to include GPM’s sustainability certifications, such as the GPM® P5 Standard for Sustainability in Project Management, integrated into PMI’s learning platforms.
These resources will guide professionals in assessing, measuring, and improving sustainability performance across their projects.
George Asamani, Managing Director, Sub-Saharan Africa for PMI, emphasized that sustainability is essential for Africa’s growth and resilience, making this partnership especially impactful in the region.
GPM’s founder, Joel Carboni, also highlighted the importance of this venture in transforming the future of project management to focus on creating prosperity, restoring ecosystems, and building equitable communities.
