NAIROBI, Kenya, July 19 – Old Mutual has partnered with the Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) to roll out professional indemnity insurance tailored specifically for architects and engineers, marking a major step in protecting built environment professionals from the rising risks of liability.
The strategic partnership, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), will see more than 5,000 AAK-licensed professionals gain access to insurance solutions that shield them from claims arising out of professional negligence, errors, or omissions in the line of duty.
Old Mutual General Insurance Kenya Managing Director, Japheth Ogalloh, said the partnership is designed to empower professionals to operate with greater confidence, knowing they are protected from costly legal claims.
“We are proud to introduce a solution that not only meets industry standards but also empowers AAK members to practice with peace of mind,” said Ogalloh.
“Built environment professionals play a critical role in shaping the spaces we live and work in. However, their work comes with considerable professional risk and responsibility. This partnership demonstrates our commitment to developing insurance solutions that respond to real-world challenges.”
The indemnity cover is expected to provide comprehensive protection from liabilities associated with design flaws, project delays, supervision errors, and breach of duty, all of which have become more frequent amid Kenya’s booming real estate and infrastructure sectors.
AAK President George A. Ndege welcomed the move, terming it a major milestone in the Association’s efforts to professionalise and protect its membership.
“This collaboration is a milestone for the Association. As we continue advocating for the highest professional standards in the built environment, it is equally important to ensure our members are protected from potential liabilities,” said Ndege.

Beyond providing insurance, the partnership will also see both parties jointly undertake research into emerging risks in the construction industry and co-develop innovative solutions tailored to the evolving needs of sector players.
Old Mutual will also support awareness campaigns and offer capacity-building programmes aimed at increasing insurance uptake and financial resilience among architects and engineers.
The deal is part of Old Mutual’s broader agenda to improve insurance penetration and offer customer-centric risk solutions across professional sectors. In recent years, the insurer has introduced similar indemnity products for doctors and legal practitioners.
