NHIF to hire new CEO as Peter Kamunyo’s term ends next month

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 9 – The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) will appoint a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) as Peter Kamunyo’s term ends next month.

NHIF Board of Management Chairman Michael Kamau said that Kamunyo’s tenure will lapse on April 14, 2023.

“The Board of National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) wishes to inform the public as follows: 1. The employement contract of the Chief Executive Officer of NHIF, Dr. Peter Kamunyo, comes to an end on 14th April 2023,” Kamau said in a statement.

“2. In light of (1) and aware of the major reforms underway at the Fund as part of the Kenya Kwanza’s transformative agenda, the Board has decided to open up the position of Chief Executive Officer for competitive recruitment exercise,” he added.

Kamunyo is set to leave the Fund after three years at the helm.

The medic joined NHIF in 2020, replacing Nicodemus Odongo, who was serving on an interim basis.

Kamunyo now joins an exodus of former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s top government officials who have either left or resigned under unclear circumstances.

Only last week, Kenye Revenue Authority (KRA) Commissioner General James Githii left after three years with the taxman.

This comes at a time when President William Ruto is replacing former regime officials with loyalists.

“The recruitment to fill all vacant positions will commence in due course,” he added.

“The board takes this opportunity to thank Dr. Peter Kamunyo for his service.”
