NAIROBI, Kenya, July 18 – NCBA Group has announced an ambitious plan to elevate Kenya’s golf talent to the global stage, with a long-term goal of producing Olympic-level golfers by the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
Speaking during a media engagement with Capital FM, NCBA Group Managing Director John Gachora said the bank’s investment in golf goes far beyond organizing local tournaments like the Equator Series.
Instead, the Group is shifting its focus toward developing elite players who can compete internationally.
“Our real focus is not the Equator Series—let me be very clear,” said Gachora. “Our real focus is golf development. The Equator Series is just one part of a broader program. Our expectation is that players will use the platform to grow and eventually qualify for international events, including the Olympics.”
Gachora emphasized that the bank’s ultimate target is to see Kenyan golfers qualify for the 2028 Summer Olympics, to be held at the prestigious Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles.
“The call is Olympics 2028. That’s the ultimate goal,” he stated. “We may not achieve it right away—2028 is not far—but at least we’ve set an ambition to work toward.”
Achieving that goal, Gachora noted, will require significant investment in player training and support systems. He referenced global golf legend Tiger Woods as an example of the level of preparation required to compete at the top level.
“If you look at Tiger Woods—how much time he spends in the gym, how many trainers, nutritionists, and mental coaches he has—there are many components that go into building a world-class golfer,” he said.
