NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 20 — Activist lawyer Miguna Miguna deported from the country in 2018 over his role in the swearing in of opposition leader Raila Odinga as the “People’s President” is back in the country.
Miguna returned unrestrained on Thursday after failed court-backed attempts under President Uhuru Kenyatta’s era.
He landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 6am, on board a Kenya Airways flight after four years and eight months in exile since his deportation in March 2018.
Speaking to journalists, Miguna said he is glad to be back, and thanked the people of Kenya for voting in the Kenya Kwanza government that has enabled his return, and the Judiciary for standing for the rule of law.
He lauded President William Ruto for upholding the rule of law by abiding by the rulings of the country’s court’s in listing Kenyatta-era red alerts which stopped airlines from flying him back to Kenya.
“I am extremely happy to be back home. Without this administration I wouldn’t be back,” Miguna stated.
“What happened to me should never happen to anyone else. A Kenyan-born citizen cannot be discarded in a foreign land,” he added.
Miguna stated that President Ruto had invited him for the Mashujaa Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens, and thereafter a state luncheon at State House Nairobi.
He had also to promised to unveil a ‘blueprint’ for the development and transformation of Luo, Nyanza upon his return.
Prior to his arrival, Miguna posted the two invitation cards, confirming that President Ruto had invited him to attend the celebrations at Uhuru Gardens and a State luncheon thereafter.
