NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 7 – The Kenya Women and Children’s Wellness Centre (KWCWC) has unveiled a state-of-the-art medical centre dedicated to supporting survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
Founded by Deloris Jordan, mother of basketball legend Michael Jordan and founder of the James R. Jordan Foundation, the facility is the largest of its kind in Kenya, featuring over 33 consultation rooms and laboratories.
It offers antenatal care, immunization, family planning, counseling, emergency services, obstetrics-gynecology, minor surgical procedures, and other essential medical services.
Built by the James R. Jordan Foundation International, the medical centre brings the total investment in KWCWC’s Gender-Based Violence Recovery Centre (GBVRC) to over Ksh. 1.3 billion.
“I have been here for a while, working through various governments from the Kibaki era to date. This Centre is for you, the people of Kenya. I’m just a foreigner, but ask yourself, what will you do to support the fight against GBV? It’s not only about women; we need men involved too. The Kenya Women and Children’s Wellness Centre is about family,” said Deloris Jordan.
The facility will complement existing medical centers, bridging gaps in access to quality, affordable, and dignified care for GBV survivors.
It expands KWCWC’s GBVRC services, which include one of Kenya’s largest rescue shelters, accommodating over 90 survivors and 20 families.
“For most survivors, leaving an abusive relationship is difficult, especially if children are involved. Many shelters can only accommodate individuals, making it harder for survivors to seek help. They fear their children will be left vulnerable or that their abuser will use them to manipulate their return. As a result, many opt to stay,” said Dr. Hermes Gichane, Director of KWCWC’s GBVRC.
Beyond medical care, the centre offers legal services, vocational training, financial literacy, reproductive health education, mental health support, and leadership training to help survivors regain independence.
“KWCWC provides psychological support, legal aid, and shelter, allowing survivors to focus on recovery. The new clinic enables us to expand these services to include medical care for them and their dependents,” Dr. Hermes added.
The medical centre will provide outpatient services and laboratory testing while partnering with other healthcare facilities to offer long-term specialized care.
