KRA launches Micro & Small Taxpayers Department to support MSMEs

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 6 – The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has established the Micro & Small Taxpayers (MST) Department to simplify tax compliance and support the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Headed by Commissioner George Obell, the department will provide customized tax education, compliance support, and sector-specific solutions to address the unique challenges faced by small businesses.

The move aligns with KRA’s commitment to fostering trust, promoting voluntary tax compliance, and enhancing economic growth.

“KRA recognizes the critical role of MSMEs in Kenya’s economy. This department will ensure tax processes are accessible, efficient, and aligned with the needs of small businesses,” the Authority stated.

The MST Department has lined up initiatives such as tax education campaigns, digital solutions, incentives for compliant businesses, and collaborations with industry leaders to create sector-specific tax solutions.

Obell, a seasoned tax expert with over 28 years of experience, previously served as Deputy Commissioner of the Medium Taxpayers Office and was appointed on March 1, 2025, to lead the new department.

He has also served as a UN tax expert and currently chairs the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) VAT Technical Committee.

Under his leadership, the MST Department aims to address longstanding MSME concerns, making tax compliance simpler and more manageable.
