NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 23 – Kenya Diaspora Alliance’s 10th Annual Convention Sparks Transformational Dialogue for Global Engagement.
The Kenya Diaspora Alliance (KDA) affirmed its commitment to fostering collaboration, innovation, and sustainable investments during its 10th Annual Kenya Diaspora Homecoming Convention (KDHC-2023).
The event which took place from 6th to 8th December 2023, at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, brought together a high-level gathering of government officials, ambassadors from various nations, both local and diaspora communities, and friends of Kenya.
KDHC-2023 marked a decade of unwavering dedication by the Kenya Diaspora Alliance to strengthen the bond between Kenya and its diaspora communities worldwide.
This year’s theme, “Innovation, Fintech, and Investments Towards One Trillion,” resonated deeply with the prevailing economic aspirations of Kenya and the global African diaspora.
Dr. Shem Ochuodho, KDA Global Chair, highlighted the significance of this event, stating; “The convention serves as a nexus for engagement, dialogue, and partnership-building among Kenyan diaspora communities and stakeholders from around the world. It underscores the vital role that diaspora members play in Kenya’s development journey, transforming challenges into opportunities.”
Among the notable personalities in attendance, Ms. Roselyn Njogu, Principal Secretary at the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, affirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of Kenyan diaspora members, emphasizing their role in the nation’s growth.
“The national government remains steadfast in addressing the needs of our diaspora communities, working tirelessly to increase investment remittances to at least 50%. We recognize the importance of tapping into the full potential of our diaspora,” said the PS.
In her compelling speech titled “Why Africa, Why Kenya,” American Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman underlined the vast opportunities presented by Africa’s economic growth and the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
Ambassador Whitman expressed her enthusiasm for greater collaboration between the United States and Kenya. She noted; “AGOA is a bridge to opportunities for Kenya and the diaspora, creating jobs and fostering economic growth. Let us seize these prospects together.”
Throughout the convention, participants engaged in comprehensive discussions, resulting in significant observations and recommendations.
Among these, the establishment of the Sharia law-compliant Muslim bond, Sukuk, marked a milestone that promotes inclusivity and market capital growth.
The importance of unity of purpose among African diaspora communities worldwide was emphasized, highlighting the need for collaboration in the continent’s development.
Recognizing that the youth form the largest working population, the convention called for their active involvement in self and national development. Numerous investment opportunities were identified, including organic agriculture, the mining sector, real estate, creative industries, and sports.
The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and the “Prosper Africa” program emerged as key avenues for boosting Kenya’s economy.
The convention encouraged diaspora involvement in trade and investment, recognizing the potential for two-way economic growth. The success of the KDA “Deal Room” was celebrated for creating opportunities that connect diaspora businesses with Kenyan entrepreneurs.
Initiatives such as solid waste management, cold storage solutions, and real estate development gained traction.
In reflection on the convention’s impact, Dr. Ochuodho stated that the Kenya Diaspora Alliance is proud to be at the forefront of fostering dialogue, innovation, and collaboration that empower Kenya and her diaspora communities.
