Jaafar Jackson has joined Will Smith in the upcoming Action-Thriller flick Supermax, a flick about FBI agents probing a murder inside the walls of a maximum security prison. Hot on the heels of the Michael biopic’s blockbuster success, the breakout star’s newest acting gig will see him join Smith and AnnaSophia Robb in the thriller whose filming starts in mid-August.
After the groundbreaking success portraying his known uncle in the Anthony Fuqua-directed biographical film, the 30-year-old actor is taking on the unspecified role in the production that is set to be distributed by Amazon MGM Studios to stream worldwide on Prime Video, written by David Weil and David J. Rosen.
Back in May, Smith and Robb were announced to play two FBI agents in the film. While plot details remain limited, filmmakers have described the project as a suspense-driven action story filled with unexpected twists.
Producer credits on the action thriller are shared by Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona of The Picture Company Smith and Adam Fishbach for Westbrook. The executive producers are Jonathan Glickman, Alexandra Loewy, Thom Zadra, Spencer Ela, Weil and Rosen, with Natalie Weil associate producing.
Following the stratospheric success of Michael, questions about Jackson’s future in Hollywood have been palpable. The actor pivoting to live-action as opposed to another music-based project could help establish him beyond the shadow of portraying his famous uncle. Working alongside Smith will also place him opposite one of the most experienced blockbuster stars.
Meanwhile, Smith was previously announced as the film’s lead and will also produce through his production company, Westbrook. His character, Rex, serves as one of the FBI agents investigating the mysterious prison killing.
AnnaSophia Robb joins Smith as his investigative partner. She recently confirmed her casting and expressed excitement about the project after the announcement became public.
