NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 9 – Homa Bay County is aiming to increase its revenue collection ahead of the Christmas season by capitalizing on its growing tourism sector.
Under Governor Gladys Wanga, the county has seen significant economic growth, transforming from a low-performing rural area into a dynamic economic hub.
Homa Bay’s own-source revenue (OSR) jumped from Sh223 million to Sh1.2 billion in the last financial year, driven by improved fiscal management and an expanded tax base.
Wanga, the county’s first female ODM chairperson, highlighted tourism as a core pillar in the county’s revenue strategy, citing its scenic landscapes, cultural heritage, and lakeside attractions that have increasingly drawn both local and international tourists.
“With the festive season approaching, we are optimistic about scaling up our revenue even further,” said Wanga, adding that tourism and other economic sectors will be key to this growth.
She emphasized that the benefits of this increase will be directed towards enhancing services and infrastructure for all residents.
The county anticipates a surge in visitors during the holidays, with events and festivals lined up to attract tourists.
Local businesses are also preparing for higher sales, contributing to overall revenue growth.
Governor Wanga’s leadership has been credited for Homa Bay’s impressive fiscal turnaround, with her continued focus on diversifying revenue sources and fostering a business-friendly environment.
