Accor eyes Kenya MICE market to grow hospitality business

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 26 — Global hotel group Accor says Kenya remains an important market in its Sub-Saharan Africa operations, with business travel, tourism and the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sector offering room for growth.

Accor Kenya Country Manager Simon Hudson said the group’s hotels were well placed to host events ranging from small meetings to large international conferences.

“When we look at Accor in Kenya we’re actually the market leader. When you look at us combined as a group in the country, our capability for handling events, particularly the MICE events, is unsurpassed,” Hudson said.

Accor operates nine hotels in Kenya with more than 1,400 rooms across seven brands, according to the group.

Hudson said the group’s Kenyan portfolio has close to 2,000 rooms and can accommodate more than 4,500 people at a time when combined for events.

He said major events expected in Kenya, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2029 World Athletics Championships, could increase demand for hotel accommodation and conference facilities.

“Kenya continues to be an important market for Accor, supported by a dynamic tourism sector and growing demand across both business and leisure travel,” Hudson said.

The comments were made during Accor’s “ALL Thanks To You” event in Nairobi, which brought together about 300 clients, partners and tourism industry players.

Hudson also said disruptions caused by industrial action at Kenya’s airports had affected the hospitality sector by disrupting travel for business and leisure visitors.

Accor operates more than 70 hotels with about 9,500 rooms across Sub-Saharan Africa and has a pipeline of 28 additional hotels, representing about 3,800 rooms, expected by 2030.
