NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 30 – Health experts are urging Kenyans to prioritise regular cancer screening, particularly among women of reproductive age, stressing that early detection remains the most effective way of managing cancer.
Speaking during a cancer awareness and free screening medical camp held at Ngiriambu Primary School in Kirinyaga County, Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, said that while cancer is a serious condition, it is highly treatable when diagnosed early.
She encouraged Kenyans to embrace routine medical check-ups, noting that many cancer-related deaths could be prevented through timely screening and intervention.
The PS also raised concern over the irresponsible use of medication, warning that the abuse of over-the-counter drugs is contributing to antimicrobial resistance, a growing public health threat.
She cautioned pharmacists against dispensing medication without proper prescriptions or laboratory confirmation.
In addition, Muthoni called for collective action to combat drug and substance abuse among the youth, highlighting the dangers posed by illicit local brews.
She urged the Ngao security team to work closely with local communities to curb the illegal trade and protect young people from substance-related harm.
The medical camp offered residents free screening services and health education, as part of broader efforts to promote preventive healthcare at the community level.
